The top four malware packer as listed by Avast! blog:

For those who don’t know what is a malware packer, a malware packer is:

A polymorphic packer is a software tool, which rolls up several kinds of malware into a single package, such as an e-mail attachment, and has the ability to make its “signature” mutate over time, so it is more difficult to detect and remove.

Source: Wikipedia

Basically, it’s a wrapper to wrap the malware and avoid the anti virus detection.

The list:

1. Lighty Compressor

Malware associated = Win.32:Fasec, Win.32: Falder and Win.32:Jifas. Other names = Alureon, Tdss, SpyGuard etc.

2. Simba Packer

Malware associated=Win32:Gaoprd. Other AV call it FakeAlert, FakeAV etc

No. Not this Simba

3. Mystic compressor

Malware associated= Win32:MalOb-W, Win32:MalOb-X, Win32:MalOb-AE, Win32:MalOb-AF, Win32:MalOb-AL, Win32:MalOb-AT. Other antivirus programs call them Bredolab, Zbot, Zeus, FraudPack, MysticCompressor, XPAntivirus, VistaAntivirus, FakeRean, Katusha and more

4. Crum Cryptor

Malware associated= Win32:MalOb-AI, Win32:MalOb-BZ, MalOb-DW, Win32:Crumpache, Win32:Rimecud. Others call it Palevo, Koobface or Rimecud.

What’s more, the “average” hackers can also buy these malware packers at a low price and use it for their own gain. Now, everyone can create a malware.  Even your annoying neighbor can buy one. So, be careful when going online and never disable your anti virus.

This is what a computer virus looks like..LOL

I’m referring to the news here regarding a recent survey done by Avira in November 2010. Wirespot.net already give their take on this survey. You can read more on the Wirespot.net post here.

The result of that survey:

62.84% – Have tried multiple security products in a one-year span on the same computer.
25.15% – Turned off the anti-virus software because I had the feeling it was slowing down my computer.
12.01% – Thought about not using the Internet because of safety reasons.

As you can see, most of the people tried different security products in a one-year span.  According to the Avira data security expert, it’s because people are trying to find the right security product for them.

Then, he also mentioned,

it is better to have minimal protection which goes unnoticed than protection with all whistles and bells which the user deactivates in order to be able to use his computer.

Never operate a PC without an anti virus

I’m not saying that this statement is 100% true. But, he’s not 100% wrong either. My take on this one, those who disabled their anti-virus actually don’t have the knowledge that the Internet is full of online threats. The threats are able to farm their banking information, use your computer as a zombie computer, and much more.  They only think that the anti-virus was slowing their computer down and never consider (Or they just don’t care) the safety reason why the anti-virus exist.

IMO, The data security expert, Sorin Mustace, when making this statement was considering it from the business perspective, if they can tackle the 25.15% market (those who disabled their anti-virus) then they can increase their market sharing in the anti-virus industry.

But, why you want to install an anti-virus that only has minimal protection? It doesn’t serve the purpose of an anti-virus. When you install a protection software, you expect it to protect you from the online threats, maybe not 100% perfect. But, you want to feel safe when using the Internet.

With minimal protection, I don’t think I will use it. I prefer those with the whistles and bells but can actually deliver and protect you from online threats.

Want to tackle the 25.15% market? I suggest, to try creating an anti-virus that can deliver, but without the whistles and bells…Now that’s better. Maybe some of you said it’s impossible. But who knows..

Does this means Avira actually only offers minimal protection? Hmm…I’m gonna let Avira to answer that.
