“Just having anti-virus software is not enough,” Rak said. “Picture a car with antilock brakes, airbags, and seat belts–I doubt any of us would buy a car without seat belts installed.”

Just over 80 percent of respondents had antispyware protections enabled, and 95 percent had updated antivirus software. Yet just 50 percent had antiphishing protections.

Even though 81 percent of respondents said they had firewall protections on their computers, only 42 percent of those computers checked were actually equipped with them. As many as 75 percent of respondents thought they had antispam filters installed when, in fact, only 58 percent actually did.

From an article on Yahoo Tech News (http://tech.yahoo.com/news/cnet/20081002/tc_cnet/8301100931005686483)

From the article, actually many of us “believe” that we are safe from online threats but in fact, we are not.

Why we “believe” we have enough protection? I don’t know about you guys, but I think it’s because we lack the knowledge that we need to protect ourselves. We thought that having only antivirus or antispyware is enough. That’s why we just don’t care about it.

However, we don’t know that we also need other protection than antivirus to protect. That’s why this blog exist, to provide you with the knowledge that you need to protect yourself from online threats. If you have any question regarding PC protection, just leave a message or comments on this blog.

I’ll try to get back to you A.S.A.P and will try to answer your question.

So, what’s the solution to this problem? I think the correct answer should be “knowledge”. If you know how to protect yourself from online threats, you don’t need to use expensive software. But, if you don’t have the knowledge, even though you’re using the most expensive and the most advance protection software in this world, it’s just the same with not using any software at all.

This year alone, 250 ooo malware have been detected earlier this year and F-Secure Lab estimated that by the end of this year, the malware will reach the 500 ooo mark. As you can see, the threats are growing rapidly today.

It’s because the malware creators are professionals nd they do it for profit. Therefore, more malware can be created.

Online banking are used by most people in the world because it saves time, money and energy. However, there are security problems in online banking. Do you think that the biggest online banking problem is phishing? No, it’s not.

The biggest problem for online banking is not phishing, it’s banking trojan and it can work in a genuine banking session. Imagine this, you want to pay your bill through online banking and you’ve checked it’s a genuine website. You see the SSL, the https connection and then you type your bill payment.

But, without you knowing, the banking trojan type another bill payment on the same website and it didn’t come out on the screen. The website will think that you’re the one who typed it and considered it genuine.

The next thing you know, you’ve paid for something that you didn’t order. My advice, always update your antivirus definition and all your protection software. This can help you to detect trojans in your computer and prevent this from happening and remember to install a firewall in your system.

Many of us are confuse with these terms and often we think that all of it are the same. They might have some similarities but actually there are not the same. Most people will think that they are and this is not a completely wrong statement.

A trojan horse was a wooden horse that was given by the Greeks to the Trojans as a gift while in fact, there were Greek soldiers hiding inside the wooden horse. When the night falls, they came out and opened the city gate to let the Greek warriors attacked the city.

A computer virus works in similar fashion. It will only be executed if the user executes it and it does not need a host for it to spread. When it has been executed by the computer user, it will spread itself on the system like a virus.

Usually it will disguise itself as a legit program to make you click on it or it will disguise itself as a folder so you will think that it’s a folder. A trojan horse is harmless if it’s not being executed.

Spyware on the other hands is not like a trojan horse. It will send your browsing habit and sensitive information to the hackers and it does not require the user to execute it. When it infects your system, you will immediately see the effects such as your computer performance will become slow, your browser homepage will change and much more.

A virus is different from spyware and trojan horses. When it infects a person’s computer, it will immediately replicate itself and will use the system memory until the system crashes. It also needs a host to spread from a computer to another computer and it can infect your system even if you don’t execute it.

So, as you can see, they have some similarities but they are not the same. In order to protect yourself from these threats, you need to have a reliable anti virus and anti-spyware and remember not to open any attachments from unknown emails.
