Have you ever seen one of the South Park episodes “The Snuke”? If you see that episode, you will see that they’re using information websites that can be obtained by anyone such as Google Search, Google Maps, MySpace, Craigslist, MapQuest, YouTube, Realtor.com, WebCrawler, eBay, PayPal, AOL, AIM, Ask, JDate, Blogs, Drudge Report, and eHarmony in order to track down the terrorist.

You might laugh at this, but in reality, I think it’s possible for anyone to obtained such information from social networking websites. People nowadays reveal their information easily on social networking websites and therefore, it makes it easy for other people to find information that they need.

Things like ‘privacy’ doesn’t exist anymore and people can learn about you in a few minutes by searching it on Google. I think it’s better for us not to reveal so much information about ourselves on the Internet or we’re risking our identity and our privacy.

Social networking websites such as Facebook, MySpace, Friendster and many more are teaching users wrong lesson? This news was featured yesterday in Yahoo News (Original article from InformationWeek.com). Here’s the link:

I think it’s must be because of the news on 4th Sept when personal details of numerous users based in U.S, has been discoverd in a server located in France. The personal details were gathered by exchanging it with freebies. The websites offered freebies to get their personal details. However, no financial information were found.

So, why the social networking websites are teaching users wrong lessons? It’s because the social networking websites are asking personal information and when the users found another websites (phishing websites) asking for the same information (name, address, age, job, etc), users will tend to give it away. Even their financial information because they’re used to give personal information to social networking websites.

Therefore, in my opinion, we need to be careful when certain websites ask too much information. To be safe, NEVER give your financial information to websites you don’t trust. If they ask your name and email, maybe we can give it away. But when they ask about address, company, hobbies, spouse name, credit card or other sensitive information, better leave that websites before they installed keyloggers to your PC.
